Prof. Dr. Urte Undine Frömming is the deputy head of the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology, the head of the Master's Program in Visual and Media Anthropology (since it's inception winter semester 2008/2009) and the head of the research area "Anthropology of Nature, Disaster and Sustainabilty Research" at Freie Universitaet Berlin. She received her MA in Social Anthropology in 1999 and her Ph.D (Dr. phil.) in 2005 from the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. She studied at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität Frankfurt/M., the Freie Universität Berlin and the Humboldt Universität Berlin and was a research fellow at the Candraditya Research Centre for the Study of Religion and Culture in Maumere, Flores-Ntt, Indonesia. Besides her interest in Visual and Media Anthropology, she specializes in Environmental Anthropology and the Social Anthropology of Hazards and Disasters (imagination, coping and adapatative strategies). She has completed several visual anthropological fieldwork studies in Eastern Indonesia, in East-Africa (Tanzania) and in Iceland. She is a member of the work group "Visual Anthropology" at the German Anthropological Association (DGV), Chairperson of KatNet (Network of Disaster research) and member of the European Forum for the Study of Religion and the Environment.
