Christian Reichel studied Social Anthropology and Geography at Freie Universität and Humboldt Universität, Berlin. He conducted fieldwork in Java and Sulawesi/ Indonesia and Romania.

His main areas of interest are visual anthropology,  natural resource/conflict management, development studies, local knowledge, nature–culture relationships, natural hazards and disasters (especially social vulnerability and resilience).
